Hi NikitoZ1989, Are you pulling your elbow under the neck of the violin when you go to the G? You need to do this so it’s easier to reach the G. Be careful not to pull the elbow too far though, or to leave it in that position after you are done playing on the G. Rotate the left arm, depending on the string. Also, make sure you are keeping your shoulders completely down and relaxed. Watch them in a mirror to see. Good luck!
Hello, professor. I’ve got a problem: after playing I got pain in the muscle to the left from the backbone somewhere under the shoulder-blade. What could it be? It seemed that when playing the G string my left hand strains to let the fingers reach the string , and that muscle is in tension, but I’m not sure(( Also, my violin weights rather hard. Maybe, you met such a problem, please help, I’m still analyzing it…
Dang, I just heard why I DO THE FUZZY SOUNDS: I DON’T PUT ENOUGH PRESSURE ON THE STRINGS!

To prevent from pressing too much on the strings, it is a good idea to shave the bridge shorter so that the strings come closer to the fingerboard? Because of pressing too hard I keep having muscle aches on my left shoulder and left shoulder balde whenever I practice. Pls comment?

Thanks so much for your helpful videos. I know you’re busy, but I’m struggling and not getting any better on a fingering. I won’t be back to my lessons until spring. It’s Bach’s Minuet (#2 in Suzuki Vol. 3, measure 74). I’m crossing 3rd finger on D to A (down bow), 2nd (F#) on D string to 1st (C) on A (up bow) and then 3rd finger on D to low 1st on A (down bow). The problem is the C natural. I can’t get my 1st finger up high enough on C no matter how hard I try. Any tips?
Thanks for this video. I’ve been playing violin for about 8 years so much of what is in your other lessons comes naturally to me already, but I wasn’t taught to play solo in front of crowds so I get very tense when I do. It’s good to have something to prevent that, especially before my solo next week. (It’s a short solo, but it’s in front of the rest of my orchestra and two of my high school’s choirs — and peer judgement is the worst of all.)
I’ve had my violin for relatively a month now, and just wonder how different it is from a viola in terms of technique and finger placement.

vibrato on the G string is really difficult for me especially with the pinky finger my body won’t relax
Hi HaibaneAyanami, I don’t really trust those grip strengtheners, but am no expert. It seems that what strength we need should develop with time and violin practice. I did know a teacher that would have students place their pinky on a desk and press down, while keeping the curve, just to develop strength. I don’t ask my students to do this, but you could try it. Also do trills with the pinky, perhaps in short bursts. Aim to contact the string on the inner left corner, if possible. TE
Hello professor, I have been learning violin for about a year now and love your videos. I have noticed that some of my fingers, particularly my pinky, lack strength and I wonder if it can make it difficult to play on the E string (as well as more controlled bowing), I’ve seen hand grip strengtheners and I was wondering if something like that would help, or is it more likely to do harm by straining the muscles and tendons. I’m very sorry to read about your carpal tunnel issues and am scared of it

Hi and good luck with your recital! You should know that EVERYONE gets nervous. I saw one of the most famous violinists in the world play the Beethoven concerto, and his bow arm was shaking. Take comfort in the fact that we are all human, and we can’t be perfect. Remeber to take several deep breaths before you play, and keep breathing while you play! Also, focus on the music, not the nerves. The nerves should pass in a couple of moments if you “become” the music. Again, good luck!

Thanks! We are continually talking about it , also with mum. He is on a 1/4 and I’ve tried a kun which has helped a bit. I will look to see if I can get his arm up, maybe it is a factor but his scroll doesn’t droop too badly.There is a lack of contact at the neck which I continually adjust.Thanks for advice.

Is the violin a little too big for him? The size/weight issue is something to consider. Hope you can help him out!
Hi Pam, I have seen this several times and used to do it myself! Try discussing posture – without the violin. Then, check to see if he is trying to hold his violin up (parallel to the floor) by arching his back instead of raising his left arm higher. If you believe that is the case, perhaps a shoulder rest (like a small Kun) would help hold the violin in the proper position.
